People unemployed or underemployed reach 16,4 million in BrazilThe numbers are IBGE indicators, recently launched.
The Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) launched new labor market indicators. Among the new indicators, which are analyzed in the National Survey of Households Continuous (Continuous Pnad), It is underemployment due to insufficient hours worked.
According to the IBGE, Brazil's population of working age, that is, above 14 years, It is divided into people into the workforce and people outside the workforce. The people within the workforce may be working (employed persons) or unemployed (that is, looking for work but could not).
Among the employed persons are those underemployed worked for insufficient hours, that is, those working less than 40 week hours, but would like to work a longer period. According to the IBGE, the underemployed due to insufficient hours worked reached 4,8 million in the second quarter of 2016. In the first quarter of the year, this number was 4,2 millions.
Already the unemployed, that is, people seeking employment but failed, They added 11,6 million in the second quarter, before you 11,1 million in the first quarter. Joining the two indicators (underemployment and unemployment) one comes to a total of 16,4 millions of people who either do not work within the period they would like or are unemployed. In the first quarter, this figure was 15,3 millions.
The rate of underemployment and unemployment in relation to the total number of people in the labor force rose from 15% in the first quarter to 16% in the second quarter of this year.
Within the total number of people of working age (14 years) there are also those who are outside the labor force. The number of out of the labor force consists of those who do not want to work (people out of the potential workforce) and those who want to work, but not seeking work or are not available for work offered (people in the potential workforce).
People in the potential labor force rose from 5,4 million in the first quarter of 2016 for 6,2 million in the second quarter of this year. The rate of people in this category in relation to all who are outside the labor force increased from 8,4% for 9,8%.
Adding to unemployment, the underemployment for insufficient hours and potential workforce, IBGE can analyze the underutilization of the labor force. The underutilization rate is achieved by adding the three indicators and dividing by the sum of employed persons (incluindo as underemployed), of unemployed persons and potential workforce. This rate rose from 19,3% for 20,9%.
The average working hours worked was in 39,1 hours in the second quarter of this year. No second quarter 2012, the average journey was 40,1 hours. Besides that, IBGE found that 2,8% the occupied had two or more jobs, while four years, the percentage was 3,5%.
