Hall creates working group to discuss the creation of the Ecological Corridor Sauim ManausThe group will be coordinated by the representatives of Semmas.
On the eve of the celebrations surrounding the Day Sauim-toed, 20/10, Manaus City Hall gives the kick to the discussion process on the creation of an urban ecological corridor that prioritizes the conservation of the species, critically endangered.
an ordinance, signed by the Municipal Secretary of Environment and Sustainability, Antonio Nelson de Oliveira Junior, formalizes the creation of an interagency working group, made up of representatives of governmental and non-governmental, in order to prepare proposal to subsidize the creation of the Ecological Corridor Sauim Manaus, and establish technical criteria for the Terms of Reference for the preparation of the Ecological Corridor Management Plan.
group attending the Municipal Environment and Sustainability (Semmas), County Attorney General (PGM), Municipal Institute of City Planning (Implurb), Municipal Infrastructure Secretariat (Seminf), Federal University of Amazonas (I trust), Amazon Victoria Foundation (FVA), Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama), Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio) and Secretary of State for the Environment (Schema) and Institute of Amazonas Environmental Protection (Ipaam). The group will be coordinated by the representatives of Semmas.
According to Secretary Antonio Nelson, the initiative is the effective contribution of Manaus Prefecture for national protection strategy to sauim-toed, which is an endemic species, symbol of Manaus, at risk of disappearing. He explained that the creation of the group will enable a democratic and participatory discussion on ways of establishing the corridor, taking into account the actual setting for its establishment and the environmental and social aspects of the same. "There is already a study initiated by institutions working for the conservation of the species and it is on it that we will look into in order to have a definition of the boundaries and how to give the process of management of the new protected area", explains Antonio Nelson.
The urban ecological corridor aims to ensure the connection between protected areas established, ensuring gene flow of species. The Sauim corridor of Manaus, according to the initial proposal to be discussed, will connect the Municipal Park of Mindu, or do Mindu Ecological Corridor, through green areas and permanent preservation, State Park Samaúma, until you reach the Reserva Adolpho Ducke, in the east. "Our goal is to get partners to contribute effectively in the discussion for the species protection strategy, according to the National Plan for the Protection of Sauim ", explains the director of Protected Areas Semmas, Márcio Bentes. According to him, the ecological corridor is a protected area management strategy envisaged by Law 9.985/2000, establishing the National Protected Areas System (Snuc).
This will be the third ecological corridor of the city of Manaus - there are already urban ecological corridors of Mindu, going from New Aleixo to the Park Ten, and Lion Waterfall, in Tarumã. "Our expectation is that we can increase protection on the territories and the species. The challenge will be to consolidate the ecological corridor from the diagnosis of the environmental quality of each area involved and implement the work plan to improve and reforest these areas ", said Márcio Bentes. The group should already have the first official working meeting next week.
Plans National Action for the Conservation of Endangered Species (PAN) They are public policy, agreed to society, that identify and guide the priority actions to combat threats that endanger the populations of both species and their natural environments, in order to protect them. The sauim-toed is considered critically endangered species (Ordinance No 444, the Ministry of the Environment - MMA). The experts who assessed the condition of the species in 2012 considered (1) its restricted distribution - because it exists only in Manaus and Itacoatiara and part of Rio Preto da Eva -, (2) the effects of deforestation, (3) competition with sauim-of-hands-golden (Saguinus midas) e (4) disorderly urban expansion are too threatening the species, can take it to extinction in a short time.
Prepare a PAN has been one of the strategies developed by the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity (ICMBio), with various partners, to prevent the species disappear. The National Action Plan for the Conservation of Sauim-toed, official in 2011, It aims to ensure at least eight viable populations of Saguinus bicolor, reducing its population decline rate and ensuring protected areas for species. The PAN consists of a general purpose, with seven goals, whose monitoring is being coordinated by the National Center for Research, Conservation and Brazilian Primates Protection – CPB and supervised by Management General Coordination for Conservation.
