Bolsonaro promises' zero tolerance’ with environmental crime and criticizes spreading unfounded information

President Jair Bolsonaro made a statement on national radio and television chain, this evening (23), to announce measures to fight fires and deforestation in the Amazon. This Friday, the government authorized the operation of the armed forces in the region, if requested by the governors. He argued that forest fires occur in other parts of the world and can not generate international sanctions to Brazil.

“Forest fires are worldwide. This can not be an excuse for possible international sanctions. Brazil will continue being, as today, a country friend of all and responsible for the protection of its Amazon rainforest”, he said.

Bolsonaro said that burning the last few weeks are the average of the last 15 years, but the government is not satisfied and will act to contain the fires. “We are in a traditionally warm season, drought and high winds, and every year, unfortunately, occurring fires in the Amazon region. In wetter years, burning is less intense. In warmer years, like this, 2019, they occur more frequently. All so, even if the fires this year are not out of the average of the last 15 years, we are not satisfied with what we are watching. We will work strongly to control fires in the Amazon”, said the president. The speech lasted just over 4 minutes.

Bolsonaro said his government is committed to fight crime, including in the environmental area, and highlighted the support given to the states of the Amazon. “We are a government with zero tolerance against crime, and in the environmental field will be different. Therefore, We offer assistance to all states of the Amazon. With regard to those who accept, autorizarei guarantee operation of law and order, a real GLO [Guarantee Law and Order] environmental. The extensive use of personnel and equipment of the armed forces, auxiliary and other agencies, will not only combat illegal activities, as well as contain the spread of fires in the region”.

The decree GLO, authorizing the use of armed forces, goes for border areas, indigenous lands, in federal units of conservation and other areas of the Amazon. The governors of Roraima and Rondônia were the first to request action of the federal military in their territories.

He said other countries have offered to help Brazil to combat fires and that will strengthen Brazil's position at the G7 meeting, scheduled for this weekend, in France, and should discuss forest fires in the Amazon, among other topics. The G7 is made up of US, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Canada and Japan.

Because of my military background and my career as a public figure, I have deep love and respect for the Amazon. The forest protection is our duty. We are aware of this and working to combat illegal deforestation and any other criminal activities that put at risk our Amazon.
