President Jair Bolsonaro (no party), said on Wednesday (15) a new decree must be done soon to ensure a further reduction of the rate of the Tax on Industrialized Products (IPI), by the concentrates of the Manaus Free Zone (ZFM), currently in 4%, due decree of former President Michel Temer (PSDB). The information was released on video posted on Facebook that the agent appears next to the congressman Silas House (PRB-AM), at Planalto Palace in Brasilia DF.
“Hello Amazonas friends, especially for those who live in the Manaus Free Trade Zone, a project from the back of the Castello Branco [president of the country at the time it was implemented the model]. We must do everything possible to keep the Free Zone guaranteed our sovereignty in the Amazon region. I'm trying to Silas House, was wrongly, a small problem with concentrates, the syrup actually… We will continue that ladder so that everyone can fit and have no prejudice regarding this measure coming from the back”, said Bolsonaro.
The 'ladder’ that the president is referring to is a gradual reduction of benefits for the soft drinks industry that was set by Temer in 2018. In July 2019 Bolsonaro signed another decree extended by a half the tax benefit and the end of the year it decreased again.
The decision to keep 4% the reduction of the IPI rate generated harsh criticism from the bench of deputies and senators of the Amazon. Silas House met with the president to address the situation.
